To Linux or not to Linux ?

I have been thinking of trying my hand at Linux. I started computing with DOS 5.0. I program in Qbasic, Quick Basic, and Visual Basic as well as HTNL. I have also worked with PIC microprocessors. I have done SOME coding in other words and I am familiar with the command line somewhat. I have and extra PC with a P4 processor and 1.5gB of RAM.

If I was to decide to install linux on the Computer, will some of you help me get started with it. I have NEVER used Linux?

How steep is the learning curve? I know this is relevant to the person and how much one puts into it...

Here is the first few questions just in case...

1. Do I need to partition and format my HD in a special way? ie..Do I need to have a Linux compatible format?

2. Where do I get Linux?

3. Is it expensive?
