I was reading something today and it contained a link to this:
Linus Torvalds Keeps Code in the Kernel for Just One User
After reading this I am rather curious as to why it is necessary to manually install the TBS drivers, after all the TBS cards are used by a lot more than one person. So if that is really his attitude, is it just that TBS never attempted to get their drivers into the Linux kernel in the first place, or is there some other reason that TBS cards aren't supported in the Linux kernel? Or does anyone even know why this situation exists? Or is that article talking about a completely different type of situation?
Since the TBS drivers aren't part of the kernel, the other thing I don't really understand is why TBS doesn't just set up their own apt-get compatible repository. That way, the latest drivers could installed and updated automatically, as part of the normal update process, just by adding that repository. There's a lot of Linux software that uses that method, and it eliminates the need for the user to compile software. I suppose some people don't think it's a big deal to have to compile software, but if you hardly ever do it there's always the fear that you're going to make a mistake and really screw up something. I have a tendency to avoid many of the kernel updates simply because I don't want to have to recompile the drivers, out of fear I will leave my system totally inoperable.
