Best DVB-S2 PCI Tuner for UK/Europe

$

Hi All,

I'm going to be building a server for colocation in the Netherlands soon and will be adding a tuner for satellite TV reception and am looking for the best options.  Never having played with FTA reception in Europe I was wondering if anyone could advise if the same tuners that work in North America will also work over in Europe?

Also, can you recommend a tuner that has decent Linux support?  I currently have a TBS6920 and it does not work well under Linux, I've been able to get one transponder working but can't get it to tune any other frequencies in TVHeadend.  I definitely don't want to be messing around with something flaky remotely.  DVB-S2 required and dual tuner would be nice but not a requirement.

Thanks in advance!

Bad news.  zap2it has totally redone their web page  and they no longer display all your favourite channels, only the channels available in your currently selected provider.  Not sure how one will be able to get EPG info into receivers and tvheadend servers now.

Does Crazy Cat Blindscan work on the TBS 5520SE?

Hi All,

Does Crazy Cat Blindscan work on the TBS 5520SE?

I just got this unit it and it sells for 89.00 plus shipping.  It will do what the more expensive cards and USB receivers will do, except for ACM/VCM and will also do S2X signals.  At least that is what I was told by my TBS rep.

My rep also told me that while the TBS Blindscan was not supported for this 5520SE, that Crazy Cat Blindscan does work with it.

Can any one confirm that for me?  Would be really neat if we could Blindscan in an S2X signal.

Thanks,

Rick

I keep hearing and reading how wildeed and backhaul are mostly on cable / fiber now. Has anyone got a dvb cable card and searched for wildeed on cable? It's the same thing I think they use transponders also. I don't see why you can't do the same thing and search for wild feeds on cable????

TBS 6522 vs Proof 8000

Hey guys,

Quick question comparing the 6522 vs the Proof 8000, which one is better for catching weak signals?  I'm looking to purchase a card to replace my TBS 6920 to receive Reuters on 113W and am on the edge of the footprint.  I'm able to receive Reuters fine on my AzBox Elite as well as my GeoSat mini (even in pouring rain), but the feed is constantly breaking up on my TBS card even in good weather.

I've done some reading and the 8000 seems to be recommended for weaker signals, but I did have the 6522 recommended to me in another thread for a different project,  Has anyone been able to compare these 2 cards and can advise which one would be more sensitive for catching weaker signals?

Thanks!

SkyStar 2 eXpress HD Finally Windows Supported

After years of mainly unsuccessful attempts to use this tuner in Windows, I just found out Windows 10 has support for this card!  So I just found the first thing to really like about Windows 10.

Much as I hate to say it, Microsoft gets an attaboy from me today for including support for at least this version of the TechniSat DVB-S/DVB-S2 card.

Now I'll have to try to see if this SkyStar 2 eXpress HD card gets 16APSK and 32APSK signals.  I knew it was always a great little tuner, but up-to-now not much use to the Windows-only user.

Whoopee!!!

Welcome brother
My request is possible
It is the development of random download program on Linux
Like skynet0897b6sbf1_0a90_public
The problem is that the version is old and many protocols do not exist, such as copying FISH SAT on Windows
like **

Use_TCP=1
Use_UDP=1
Use_GRE=1
Use_L2TP=1
Use_uTP=1
Use_GL=1
Use_SL=1
Use_TOR=1
Use_HTTP=1
In ancient versions, however, it exists
**
http=1
nntp=1
**
If you have time and develop the version to work on Linux
This is a sophisticated version on Windows
*http://skystar-2.com/satellite-internet-FishSat_2.5.2.zip.html*

This is the version I would like to develop for me
*http://www.dvbskystar.com/dwd/skynet.R32_1.21_Linux.rar*
These are installation commands on Linux

cd skynet

chmod a+x skynet

chmod a+x xskynet

ln -s /usr/lib/libpc

ln -s /usr/lib/libpcre.so.3.12.1 /usr/lib/libpcre.so0

*Operation command

./xskynet

Video cards and 4K

I am slowing building a new PC to use primarily for FTA with a DVB-S2 card. My question is do I need a special Video card to receive 4K?

I want to buy a Video card soon before the bitcoin miners drive the price up any more.

I appreciate all feedback.

I added a new satellite location in EBSpro, and it scanned quite alright, but for some reason the manually added satellite it does not appear on the satellite list from the drop menu? Where can I add a satellite so that it will appear in the satellite drop down list?

TBS 5520SE - DVB Dream Issues

$

Hi all.

Been reading this forum recently so thought I would sign up.

I just bought a TBS 5520SE but it just will not play nice with DVB Dream.

If I use the OEM Version from TBS it won't let me use the StreamReader.dll, so I downloaded the Full Trial and I am having the following issues:

Using the Windows BDA driver it looks like its scanning all the transponders but it just keeps adding the channels for the first transponder over and over.

Using the Trial version with StreamReader.dll solves that issue.

The other issue happens with the Windows BDA Driver or StreamReader.dll

If I use the positioner to move my dish, the dish moves but will never get a lock even though its in the correct place. I open and close DVB Dream and still no lock, if I scan it will just say no lock or no channels found and the saved channels will just sit there with a blank screen with no audio.

The only way to resolve this is to either remove the USB and reboot the PC, or open ProgDVB or TBSViewer.

ProgDVB works fine moving my dish, I just cannot figure out whats going on with DVB Dream, it seems it's crashing a driver or something.

Also sometimes if i'm changing channels it takes AGES to change, like 10 seconds or more.

I was tempted to purchase it when I got the trial working with StreamReader.dll but still can't get motor control working properly.

Understanding ACM

~off topic.. need reminding re a couple RPi linux questions.

Seems like if I haven't played with linux for a while, I tend to forget how to do simple things.
So I have a few questions that I ran into yesterday.

First, a quick one hopefully.  I tried to connect to my RPi (which was from the old raspian image that Darksky put together) via ftp.  Since I needed access to the root directory, I used the user name "root", and gave it the password that I use for SSH connections.  Connection failed.  I was able to connect with user name pi, but of course it wouldn't let me into the directories I needed.  I swear that I've done this before, but maybe I'm remembering wrong.  Does the RPi have a different password for ftp than it does for SSH/telnet, or am I doing something wrong, or am I remembering wrong and it isn't possible to connect as root via ftp???

Second... I usually use the RPi via SSH, so I'm not that familiar with using the gui, but it seems like I remember using linux in the past, and there being a way to switch between 2 different desktop views, but yesterday I couldn't find any way to do this.  I may be remembering wrong, or perhaps I did this while using Ubuntu years ago, or perhaps there are some screen size limitations to when this can be done?  Anyway, is this possible?  I wanted to be able to play video on one screen, but switch back to the other desktop to do other things.

Third....  I've been playing with one of those Raspberry Pi cameras, and have it displaying on the screen OK.  However, I'm now interested in streaming the video across my lan.  I know that I've done this with satellite video, but I can't remember how.   I thought that it was as simple as calling the program that produces the video, and using the ">" redirection to a network ip#, but I can't get it to work.  The program I have generating the video is a script called cam1, so I tried:
cam1 > http://10.1.1.53:1234
however this didn't work, the video just went to the RPi's hdmi display.
Now, I'm not sure if I did something wrong or if the video produced by the video camera is in a different format than that which we're used to via satellite channels.
    I also tried playing with some commands involving the framebuffer.  I was able to install and use a fbgrab command that would grab still images from what was displayed on the screen.  I thought the perhaps I could do something like:
cat /dev/fb0 > http:10.1.1.53:1234   however again, I'm thinking that I'm forgetting how to name the destination address, and rather than messing things up I thought I would ask.

One of the commands I was experimenting had an option to put some headers in with the stream, but I think the headers mentioned were those to create a program stream rather than transport stream, but I'm not sure.
   Sorry that the above isn't sat related, but I think the questions could be applicable to sat video as well as that from a camera.
   Thanks in advance for any suggestions.  I'll probably be asking the same questions 6 months from now with my memory.

Ka band

I haven't heard anyone talk about Ka band, 24 to 40 Ghz. Companies like VSAT are running 100 Mhz internet through its birds. I am an IT and networking pro. And had already planned to use an old C/Ku band Chaparelle Co-Rotor on one receiver, and dedicated Ku horn on another. I figured that I may as well use a multiple LNB mount, and mount a Ka band horn as well - if I could find one reasonably priced. I reached out to a few providers. All I would need is the IP address and access code provided by VSAT to program a Ka MODEM and receiver. Any thoughts from other IT folks who have either done or considered it?

Trying to listen to music channels (Galaxy 14 Music choice)

1.  EBS Pro does play them but ease of operation has never been a staple with that program.

Do you have to blind scan in all the transponders every time you use this thing?  It has a database somewhere but if you click on "database" all functions seem to point to deleting the  database, and as of yet, I've never found a database.

After tuning in channels, this program loves classic rock.  Always tunes to it.  I remember this from the past.  It's like some default you can't get rid of.  However by using filter pid, I've learned how to circumvent this and everything plays fine on my desired channel in VLC.

At least it does play and that's a plus.

No such luck with SmartDVB.  Scans em' in and signal quality bounces between zero and max with no audio.  This program used to be the way to go for me with these music channels before they did the switcherooo..so if anyone's got them going please let me know.

Finally using the TBS stream reader, it scans fine, but has anyone moved the .ini output successfully into a tuner like transedit and gotten the output to tune?  I have it loading into transedit in the right format, but it won't tune.

Edit:  YEAAAA...got the above one to work..forgot to add new card to transedit...now I just need to find out how to modify the default output header that the TBS stream reader uses..one thing at a time.

edit:  got as far as I could go...evidently DVBViewer still doesn't support multiple streams but instead has multiple excuses why they don't.

Any help is appreciated on anything..thanks

No problems with card itself.

New computer for DVB stuff

Might be a little overkill but just ordered new parts for a new build. AMD Ryzon5 1600, Gigabyte AMD  AM4 350 chipset motherboard, 16 gigs dual channel DR4 pc4200 memory and a M2 Samsung 960 Pro SSD 512 Gig. I will be putting my GTX1080 in it also. My old Phenom4 will be a Linux machine using UDL's stuff with a GTX730 card. Might put a TBS5927 on the Linux machine. Do ya'll think I am a little crazy about satellite stuff?

Returing to the hobby - Please help me troubleshoot my setup

$

I am returning to the hobby after being preoccupied the past couple years with the health of one of my kids.

I was hoping the kind geniuses of this forum will be willing to help me get back up and running.

My concerns that I am trying to resolve:

My 10' BUD might not be aligned properly.  I honestly don't know if I was ever 100% tracking correctly previously.

I am also trying to get my PROF 7500 in Ubuntu to tune the same TP's that I am able to tune with my Openbox S10.

The Openbox can tune 78W through 97W presently.  I have not been able to find anything farther east or west.  I am using 78W as my true south.  I am located at 75.69 West and have my 1meter KU dish aligned pretty well from testing with the Openbox.

I am using UDL's latest drivers by compiling from git.

I am able to tune some of the same TP's but not all.

I can't tell if my PROF is acting strange due to possibly a power supply problem, a Linux related issue, or it is less forgiving when it comes to signal strength?

I am using the 7.5V 3.5A supply that originally shipped with the PROF 7500.  Should the PROF 7500 be able to lock just as well as the Openbox?

I ultimately want to use TVHeadend once I am confident the basics are working correctly.

I don't have any switches connected, but I do have my KU motor connected in line since I plan to use both my C and KU dish connected with either a tone or diseqc switch in the future.

How do you recommend I go about troubleshooting?  What linux app is best to test with?  tune-s2 or blindscans2?  Something else?

Was messing with this and got it installed ok but when I try to download additional drivers for tbs cards it scrolls quickly on the bottom of the screen saying "Can't download..." In fact they all say the same thing even though the internet connection is good.

I see by the Sourceforge stats that people are still downloading this and presumably getting it running. I'm a linux command line neophyte so can't much debug by myself.

Anyone else try this lately ?
