I've been using VLC for over a decade, through a variety of different versions, and it has worked very well for me. I've used it both for playing live, by streaming to it from TSREADER, and I've also used it to play back recordings, most of which were created by TSREADER. It has worked great. My computer has an HDMI output, and I play directly to my TV via cloning the desktop.
Well, I'm not sure exactly when this started, but for the past 2, 3 or 4 weeks, I've noticed that VLC is no longer playing back recordings properly. The audio is out of sync by a couple seconds, ie enough to be really annoying. If I watch live, by streaming, then the audio is perfectly in sync. Same source, usually PBS H264 HD, same VLC, both used TSREADER to either stream or record, but the recordings have out of sync audio.
I don't know what I did to cause this, but it WAS working. I remember a few weeks ago, there was a thread here about some problems playing back PBS H264 video, so I was experimenting using MPC instead of VLC, which I think did work slightly better in some cases, then I started experimenting with a couple other programs, like an Arc-soft media player, and a DVB scheduler program some people recommended, along with WMP and my RPi. All the experimentation here was with live streaming via TSREADER, and I was happy that I if I did run into a problem, I could just stream to MPC or WMP. All worked will when streaming live.
But then I tried playing back recordings, and things "had" stopped working.
Apparently it's more than just a VLC problem. Last night, I wanted to watch a PBS program that I had recorded both on my Dishnet _AND_ off AMC21 with TSREADER. I first started watching it via my Dishnet recording just because it is more convenient in case I need to pause, rewind, fast forward, etc, however apparently this recording was made during a storm, and 3 times during the episode, the program was interrupted with local weather info, so I decided to switch to my AMC21 recording. And, when I started playing it, I found that the audio was out of sync, so I switched to MPC, and it was out of sync too, so after watching out of sync audio for a while each time, I switched back to DN. But I was determined to figure this sync thing out today.
So while typing this, I experimented by moving the recording to my wireless laptop, and playing the video there. Sure enough, it was in sync, so I figured that it must be some problem with my main computer. So I went back there, looking to see if somehow hardware acceleration got turned off or something, but it was OK. Then I decided to play the video through HDMI to my TV, and experiment with the VLC SYNC function (I wish I had thought of that last night). However when I started the video playing, of course, it was perfectly in sync this morning. Same exact file that wouldn't play last night. No changes to the computer. It runs 24/7, so it had never been off. And I had re-started the video a half dozen times last night, and it was out of sync each time, yet this morning it's pefectly in sync. Interestingly, I just tried playing it with MPC, and it is still out of sync with MPC?!?!? So I tried ArcSoft total media, and it plays fine. I tried WMP, and it is WAAAYYY out of sync, like 5 or 6 seconds.
I've found that even when I can't play on my main computer via VLC or MPC, that I _CAN_ play the same video back via the OMXPLAYER on my Raspberry Pi, and the audio is in sync, however since I can't get the omxplayer's seek 30 or seek 600 commands to work, it is very inconvenient to use, because I have to watch programs from beginning to end, and sometimes I start a recording early (sometimes as much as an hour or more), knowing I can jump to the beginning with VLC, so I can't use omxplayer for these recordings.
Anyway, I can't figure out why this is happening, and only happening at certain times and other times it doesn't happen. It doesn't see to be a CPU overload. It does seem to be higher than I remember, around 40%, 33% of which is VLC, but not big enough to cause problems. With MPC, it's only running at around 25%, but it's out of sync. ????
Anyway, ANY ideas of why suddenly VLC and MPC would start mis-behaving playing back H264 HD from PBS some times, but not others?????
I'm about ready to re-install windows on my computer, as it's getting full of programs I rarely use, and when I do use them, they cause problems.
